Biography — Court Singer
Karl-Magnus Fredriksson received his education at the University College of Opera in Stockholm (Operahögskolan i Stockholm), where he studied with Professor and Court Singer Erik Saedén from 1988 to 1991. He graduated in 1991 and has since worked actively as an opera, concert and lied singer.
He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music (Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien) and was appointed Hovsångare (Court Singer) in 2004. In 2013 he received the Litteris et Artibus medal from the hand of His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
Karl-Magnus has released 43 albums, spanning masses, oratorios, works by earlier and contemporary Swedish composers, Nordic art songs, songs by Bellman and contemporary Swedish singer-songwriters, romances and orchestral songs. His recordings are available on Spotify and other streaming platforms.
He has worked continuously to perform and spread the art of song around the world, preferably by blending Nordic romances, German lieder, French, Italian and English songs, and sacred repertoire, in his song recitals. His desire to explore new forms of expression and connect with listeners through his multifaceted vocal art is expressed through his own compositions and arrangements for voice, piano, instrumental ensemble, and personal spoken poetic reflections.
He has also been active as a sculptor since 2016, with his works represented in places such as the Royal Palace, Waldemarsudde, the Alfvén House and Berwaldhallen in Stockholm. He also produces portraits on private commission.
In September 2025 he sang a recital together with his student and colleague Asmik Grigorian at La Scala. In the spring of 2026 he sings, among other roles, in Madama Butterfly, and in the autumn the role of Scarpia in Tosca at the Royal Swedish Opera.
